Anything But Cute Challenge #19 - Rustic Glam

Happy Saturday!! I hope you have fun plans for the weekend!! It's time for a new challenge at Anything But Cute!! The theme this week is an awesome one...Rustic Glam :)

The fabulous and amazing Niki of Pawsitively Creative is the hostess for this challenge!! Here's what she had to say about the theme:

Create a mixed media design featuring rustic elements such as whitewashed wood, chicken wire, burlap, soft subtle tones and neutrals. Don't forget to add the GLAM part with some sparkle and BLING!

For my Rustic Glam project, I upcycled an old bamboo light. This is what it looked like before.

I disassembled it and then coated the surface with super heavy gesso.

Once the gesso dried, I covered it with DecoArt Weathered Wood Crackle Medium. Once that dried and the cracks appeared, I applied DecoArt Antiquing Medium in Antique Gray to the cracks and then wiped most of it off with a wet wipe.

Here's where my project went off course. I'd planned on using real chicken wire and then adhering crystals to the holes. So, I went to Menards and Rural King and Tractor Supply, hoping to purchase a small roll. The smallest roll I could purchase was 50 yards!! I really had no use for 49 extra yards of chicken wire. So I was wandering the aisles of Joann and I came across these rolls of mesh. The one on the left is actually a chicken wire pattern with bits of glitter...glam bonus!! I loved the look of the one on the right, too so I purchased both :)

I used the chicken wire mesh on two sides and this one on the other two. To add a bit more bling, I strung crystals and added them to the panels.

Here's another look at the chicken wire mesh. You can see the bits of glitter.

It's kinda like Rustic Glam meets Shabby Chic!! Now it's your turn!! Head on over to Anything But Cute to see the AMAZING projects my very talented design team sisters have created for today's challenge!! Then link up your Rustic Glam mixed media project! I can't wait to see what you create :)

Lisa, I am blown away by your creative thinking for this challenge!! This lamp is incredible! I have two very similar lamps that I just despise and you have really inspired me to try and do something with them! Both of the mesh fabrics work so well and I love the addition of the crystal strands, they must really catch the light! The crackle base is the perfect way to go for this and the end result of this makeover is rustic glam at it's absolute finest!! Well done, bravo, end scene!! lol. Love it!! hugs :)

Lisa, can you hear the thud? That's my jaw hitting my keyboard! Your transformation of a not so pretty lamp to this Rustic Glam Designer's dream is supercalefragelistic! Your used of the crackle on the frame is a perfect compliment to those lovely meshes you picked out. The heavier version is my favorite and really makes takes this from fabulous to WOW, WOW, WOW! Can you tell, I'm out of adjectives? And the perfect finishing touch are those crystal strings! Really a knockout project, Lisa! (This would look great in Punkin's new room!) Big hugs!

Oh Wow Lisa, this turned out so beautiful!!! I knew where you were going after you said you went to all those stores. lol I know around here you can only by the chicken wire by the roll, yes a big roll! You would think the craft stores would carry sheets of it wouldn't you?! But you compensated really well with the tule. Love how both look on this lantern and I love the added crystals. Well done my friend!!! Hugs, Brenda

Absolutely beautiful, Lisa! If I were faced with a challenge like this, I would have no idea where to start! You are so talented at all the crafts and you've made a beautiful decor item! Wonderful upcycling!

MaryH said...

This is so stunning! Love that you found such a nifty alternative to the 'real stuff' (AND didn't have to buy 50 ft of it!). You've a fantastic creative eye to see how you could adapt these supplies to your lovely project (as well as FIND them in the first place). Sometimes our local JoAnn does not have much variety to offer, and all of the box stores seem to be downsizing on paper craft supplies. TFS & Hugs. (and I'm with Kitty, I'd have no clue as to where to start with this effort.)
